The September issue of VIBE magazine (the one with Barack on the cover) includes a feature called "Get Your Paper Up", in which they select the best 8 music books. One of them is Douglas Wolk's Live at the Apollo book, about which this is said:
A detailed chronicle of what is arguably the greatest live album of all time. Wolk shrewdly frames Brown's 1962 Apollo performance against the tense backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis - many in the audience feared they had less than 10 days to live.

Wow, that's esteemed company, especially for a new book. The Tate book is very good - I got it back when it came out in the early 90s. It's out of print, but well worth hunting down.
