Making Plans (for Nigel)

Given that the soonest we could possibly have another open window for proposals is around this time next year, it's a bit dumb to be posting this now, but hey: which albums would you most like to see covered in the series?

Bear in mind that the "one book per artist" rule is being discarded next time around, so feel free to suggest other albums by people who've already been covered in the series. Or albums that haven't yet been released...

I'll start things off:

New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
Neil Diamond - Tap Root Manuscript
Bhundu Boys - The Shed Sessions
Radiohead - Kid A

Sunday Afternoon Update:

Thanks to everyone so far for some fascinating suggestions, many of which haven't come up much in the past. And thanks also to Zach for pointing out that several of the records mentioned are actually being written about, as we speak. As for the emerging/growing boner question, let's just say that I can see both sides of it. You've got to think there are still dozens of fascinating stories to be told (although it would be naive to assume that every great album has much of a story behind it) - we just need to find the writers who can bring those stories to life...

Actually, I think 33 1/3 books should only be about authorial boners. Seriously.

If I want a straight "how the album was made" story, I can read back issues of Musician. My favorite books in the series have been reactions to the album, rather than being strictly about the album.

A lot of these albums already have books being made, or even released already in one case.
Namely:

Richard and Linda Thompson – Shoot Out the Lights
Pavement – Wowee Zowee
The Flying Burrito Brothers – The Gilded Palace of Sin
Public Enemy – It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Brian Eno – Another Green World
Nas – Illmatic
Belle & Sebastian – If You're Feeling Sinister
The Clash – London Calling (hesitant about this one, as it was once commissioned but the original author wasn't able to complete it. However, on this very blog, you said that there would be news about a new author "soon", which was some time ago)

Do your research people! Also, don't discourage the so-called authorial boners!

Can we please get some De La Soul? —"De La Soul Is Dead" would be fantastic.
—"Buhloone Mindstate" would be equally so.

D'Angelo's "Voodoo" would be lovely as well.

Marvin Gaye's "Here, My Dear" has the chops and history to be ridiculously good.

Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" is complicated, content- , context- and composition-wise.

But really, De La Soul. I mean, seriously.

Marc Caputo said...

Say it with me everyone -

"3 Feet High and Rising"!!!!

Yes, "De La Soul is Dead" is truly a staggering achievement, but it's overshadowed by the previous album by being a response to the response to the first album.

Also, why do I have the feeling that in the next year, someone's going to start a band called "Authorial Boners", and record an album just so they can pitch a book on the album?

Zack said...

I'd be interested to see more critical writing on conventionally maligned albums, things in genre ghettos (particularly "pop"), and so on. Obviously there's only one Carl Wilson, but there are so many Celine Dions... Basically, as you see in these comments, there are still tons and tons of great canonical rock/jazz/soul/rap albums that have yet to be written about, but I also wonder if there aren't diminishing marginal returns to writing about them -- that more 33 1/3 books in this mold will grow increasingly indistinguishable from each other.

Clive said...

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Too Much Joy - Son of Sam I Am
The Skids - The Saints Are Coming
Lloyd Cole - Lloyd Cole (AKA the X album)
Crowded House - Crowded House
David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees
Arcadia - So Red The Rose
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
The Tender Idols - Distressor (the greatest unknown album released since the millennium)

Almost all of the above acts are dismissed as tuneful but ultimately lightweight--and they're not. There's serious cred waiting to be uncovered for all these guys (excepting the Smiths, who of course, ARE taken seriously--but you need a non-fic Smiths entry in the series and that's the album).

Someone mentioned Naked City--that'd be cool but hard to believe there'd be enough there for an entire book, even if Zorn is such a fascinating character.

I picked CROWN OF CREATION over VOLUNTEERS because I find it holds together better as an album, because it represents the various players most completely, and (most importantly) because it's the best vantage point to consider the group's transformation from folk psychedelicists into a more confrontational political unit. But the book looks ahead as well as to the group's past. I favored VOLUNTEERS as an album when I started writing, but I convinced myself that CROWN is their best by writing about it.

G. E. Light said...

Marc,

iTunes offers a single download of Temptation the 7" (edit) or as part of Disc New Order Singles
The Qwest double CD version of Substance is readily available from places like Amazon and has the 12" version of Temptation.

Are those the what you're looking for?

You could shell out 60 plus for a CD copy of Factus 18 but why? unless you're an original release fetishist.

Best.

This story must be told. This is the most underappreciated album in their Discography and it has a fascinating story and classic songs. The ouster of John and the story of replacement Doug Yule and his role in the band. Lou's new subdued sound and songs and whether the theft of their amplifers contributed to that. The bands relationship with the town of Boston. I hope it will be told in the same way VU and Nico's book was. In depth analysis of the songs, production and back story.
