21 New Books for the Series

This wasn't an easy decision-making process, there were just so many good proposals to choose from. A very big "thank you" to everyone who submitted a proposal - I learned a lot just from reading them all.

Anyway, I'm very pleased to announce that we'll be publishing the following books in the 33 1/3 series during 2007 and 2008:

"If You're Feeling Sinister" by Scott Plagenhoef
"Aja" by Don Breithaupt
"Shoot Out the Lights" by Hayden Childs
"Pretty Hate Machine" by Daphne Carr
"Use Your Illusion" by Eric Weisbard
"Horses" by Phil Shaw
"Double Nickels on the Dime" by Mike Fournier
"Pink Moon" by Amanda Petrusich
"People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" by Shawn Taylor
"Achtung Baby" by Stephen Catanzarite
"20 Jazz Funk Greats" by Drew Daniel
"The Dreaming" by Ann Powers
"Rid of Me" by Kate Schatz
"Another Green World" by Geeta Dayal
"Songs in the Key of Life" by Zeth Lundy
"Trout Mask Replica" by Kevin Courrier
"Let's Talk About Love" by Carl Wilson
"Lucinda Williams" by Anders Smith Lindall
"69 Love Songs" by LD Beghtol
“Marquee Moon” by Peter Blauner
“Swordfishtrombones” by David Smay

i'll be the first to comment!!

writers: glad to see the husband & wife team of eric weisbard & ann powers, both late of classic 90s village voice. for my money, they've got the biggest cache of all 33 1/3 writers alongside miles marshall lewis and michaelangelo matos.

albums: i gotta assume weisbard is doing both "use your illusions". will you print two different book covers? (laugh) "songs in the key of life" is welcome and inevitable. gotta have stevie! "achtung baby", "people's instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm" and "pretty hate machine" are the most exciting to me in addition.

this can't have been easy; treat yourselves to a drink!

I'm so happy to see two more of my Lost in the Grooves anthology-mates made the cut (David Smay and Hayden Childs)! It's a terrific list, and I can't imagine how hard it was to winnow the scads of good pitches that came in.

I bet Mike Fournier's Minutemen book will be interesting--the documentary that's playing around is incredibly touching.

Really curious to see the tacts taken with this new list. Congratulations to all, including the hard working Continuum folks.

Writing about pop music is like dancing about split-levels.

Beautiful Playing by Heart quote. Hopefully no one morphs into an anger ball.

Happy to see the new choices. I am pleased to see Captain Beefheart, Television, Nick Drake, Stevie Wonder, and Brian Eno, but I'm kind of confused or dissapointed with some of the choices. I understand that they may be well written but Celine Dion? I really love these books and I hope this is not the last of the series, because I grew extremely excited when I read that alot of people wanted to write about epic albums by classic artists such as Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley and was looking forward to these classic albums being written about, and published.

glad to have a U2 album in the mix.

seriously, not to create some kind of debate/uproar, but—i love this series, and what i love about it is not so much the albums—is it about the writing, and the ways in which the authors explore and examine their relationships to the mucic & artist. so i don't think that one can make too many judgements based on this list—certainly, one can be psyched that a particular album is there—but as of this point, we have no idea what the writer's approach/concept is going to be. some of my favorite books in the series are about albums that i have or had no major interest in—i just enjoy the way the writer shapes the story. and btw—"epic albums" by "classic artists"...pretty subjective, eh? in all, i'm excited to see what all of these writers are going to do with their title—from celine to tom to eno to pj to bono...

I guess you are right, but im just kind of dissapointed. Maybe it is just me

It's not just you - it is dissapointing that some of the rpoposals didn't make it through.

But I think that the other commentor is totally right about it being just as much about the writers and their angle on the album as it is about the album itself. And I trust David enough to pick out the best of the proposals, don't you? He's done a damn fine job of it so far.

You are absolutely right. And yes, i do trust he would pick the best only, he has in fact done a great job so far.

Really psyched for the Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and oddly the Guns and Roses volume. The Celine Dion one promises to be... interesting...

Hm, well, yes. Some of these look promising but they could be a little *edgier*. Beefheart's nice though.

Thinking, though, that while I may not like individual books in the series, I like the *idea* of the series. Wondering whether there are other similar publishing opportunities, especially for those of us that don't write for the Village Voice or play in indie rock bands, but who are toiling away obscurely in academia, etc.

David said...

Good question. Well, we tried a similar series a few years ago, on contemporary novels, but it wasn't too successful. (Although the one about The Wind-up Bird Chronicle still sells...) And you've got the BFI series about films. And Reaktion do a cool series of books about animals: so far they've done books on Ant, Bear, Bee, Cockroach, Crow, Dog, Falcon, Oyster, Parrot, Rat, Snake, Tortoise, and Whale. Perhaps the Arctic Monkey will be next.

Oooh! Wait up 300poundghost - I know where the poor, unappreciated academics can publish their *edgy* musings: peer reviewed journals! Custom made for academics, aren't they?

Throbbing Gristle! Excellent addition, folks, but where's the My Bloody Valentine book?

David said...

I'm so sorry about the MBV book. Now I know how Alan McGee felt. It'll happen, definitely.

So few non-rock choices. Sigh.-

David, if we didn't make the cut, is it worth re-pitching next year or will only new pitches be considered?

David said...

I don't know if there will be another round next year (or the year after), but if there is then we'll be happy to look at proposals from people who've pitched before. A couple of the writers who made the cut this time had been unsuccessful previously.

Thx for the quick response. Hopefully my anonymity shall be revealed if and when I get picked! HA!

No Sparks!!!! But nevertheless the list is interesting. But back to my passion: No Sparks!!!!!

Faith No More's Angel Dust.... Pleeeeeeease!!!!!!

Kate Bush's The Dreaming is just a classic epic choice. Let's hope they do it justice (also Aja, Songs in the Key and Trout Mask)

Anonymous said...

OOO, yes! Angel Dust is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I'd also like to see Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger.

Marc Caputo said...

Totally jazzed for many of these.

Some questions - according to Amazon.com, the Television book is "out of print" and has been for some time. Was it solicited and never written?
Also, the ONE book I want more than any other is the De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising", which also showed on Amazon. What gives?

I'm very far from academia, yet...still find the books I've read from 33 1/3 to be complete and utter wank-off's, that Velvet Underground and Nico book (for instance) was just awful, I mean TERRIBLE, damn. There's stiff academic writing and...there's crap that's so loose it falls under the category of diarrhea, unfortunately too often books in this 33 1/3 series is of the latter.

Hi...great books...great music.

I note, that unless I'm wrong, there's very little from the San Francisco '60s, if anything. Certainly Surrealistic Pillow or Anthem of the Sun deserves its own book(s).

Anonymous said...

is there a website about this series where i can learn more? This is the only thing I can find when i search.

Hooray for Tom Waits and NIN!

Angel Dust is a fantastic suggestion. There also needs to be some Sabbath and The Decemberists' Castaways and Cutouts needs to be done. Not to mention Robyn Hitchcock's I Often Dream Of Trains, Belly's Star and Luna's Bewitched.

And I'm probably alone in this, but I'd LOVE to see somebody tackle the monumental importance of Carter USM's 101 Damnations. (No, I'm not joking.)
